📘 The 2026 Series
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Littlescribe Literary Review

“Like the Brewongle bushland that inspired them, these stories are resilient, diverse, and quietly powerful. Each young author has planted a word, tended an idea, and grown a story — a living testament to the enduring connection between children, creativity, and the natural world.”

Writing Type:
Creative writing, narrative fiction, short story anthology, student-authored text, collaborative bookmaking, visual literacy (student illustration), and environmental storytelling. This includes hand-written drafts, typed narratives, and mixed-media student artwork.

Themes:
Environmental awareness and conservation (e.g., climate change, pollution, endangered species), connection to nature and place (including Dharug Country and Kakadu), adventure and survival (tsunamis, time travel), mystery and suspense, courage and resilience, and finding your voice. There is also a strong theme of student agency—characters taking action to protect their environment or overcome personal doubts.

Learning Purpose:
Students learn to plan, draft, revise, illustrate, and publish a collaborative anthology. The process builds skills in narrative structure, descriptive detail, character development, and editing. It supports confidence, resilience, and self-expression, while also fostering a deeper connection to the environment and understanding of the writing and publishing process (supported by authors Kris Darell and Simon French and Littlescribe).

Use in the Classroom:
Can be used as an exemplar text for English, Creative Arts, and Geography/Science (environmental themes). Suitable for whole-class or small-group discussion, writing stimulus, peer feedback, or model-text analysis. It provides authentic student-written examples of narrative structure (e.g., story hooks, dialogue, tension building) and demonstrates how student work can be professionally published. It is also useful for modelling the drafting process, as the book shows the progression from handwritten drafts to published pages.

Audience:
Years 4–6 (ages 9–12) based on the participating student cohort. Teacher guidance is recommended when exploring complex emotional or environmental themes (e.g., climate anxiety, loss, natural disasters, and suspense/fear elements like the “Skinwalker” story) and when facilitating feedback on student writing.
